Local Transport

There are good roads in most parts of Ghana but roads outside the major town and cities are not always in good condition. This can make some journeys rather uncomfortable. For long distance travel, the State Transport Corporation buses offer safety, comfort and reliability. Mini buses also ply between most city and town centres. Please note that travellers are routinely stopped at police checkpoints. Mini buses and taxis are also used for short distance travel.

Self-drive and chauffeur-driven vehicles are available at reasonable rates from companies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar and Pace. Taxis are readily available and fares can be bargained.

There is a rail service between Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi. The Volta Lake Transport Company operates a lake service from Akosombo to Buipe port. Lake Cruises are available on the Volta Lake. There are also scheduled internal air services to and from most domestic airports.
