Terrible things will happen to NDC in 2012 - Obiri Boahene A former Minister of State at the Interior
Ministry under the erstwhile Kufuor
administration, Nana Obiri Boahene has predicted
that terrible things will happen to the ruling NDC
government if pragmatic steps are not taken to
solve the deepening internal wrangling ongoing in
the party.
Speaking on the Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday,
Mr. Obiri Boahene said the vilifications, trading
of insults between the perceived Mills faction and
the Rawlings’ faction is a clear indication that
the party will be doomed in 2012 if the two
factions do not unite within the next few months.
“The signs are so obvious, so obvious for every
average Ghanaian to make a prediction of that
sort. Look at the infighting going on, it is not a
mere infighting going on. Trading of insults,
accusations vilifications and what have you. They
are not going to heal the wounds now or the next
few months.
From now till May when they close the nominations
and until July when they come to Sunyani for their
congress, terrible things are going to happen to
the NDC.
“I am not predicting the doom of the party but I
can stick my neck out and say without the
slightest reservation that worse things are going
to happen to the NDC. Look at what is happening in
the party; insults from Konadu’s camp to
Mills’s camp on daily basis...things are not
working well for the NDC at all”.
According to Mr Obiri Boahene, the opposition New
Patriotic Party unlike the NDC is much more united
than before adding that “with singleness of
purpose the NPP will dislodge the NDC in the 2012
elections”.
The NDC has been in some form of severe internal
bickering after the former first lady, Nana Konadu
Agyeman Rawlings declared her intentions to
contest President Mills for the flagbearership
slot of party ahead of election 2012.
Although Mrs Rawlings is yet to pick her forms to
confirm her intentions, it is clear that she will
contest President Mills after she resigned from
her position as a Vice Chair of the party.
Former President Rawlings, who has been an ardent
critic of the Mills-Mahama administration has
publicly stated that he would not campaign for
President Mills should President Mills win the nod
to lead NDC for a second term.
However, the Propaganda Secretary of the NDC
Richard Quashigah has dismissed Mr Obiri
Boahene’s claims that the NDC will fall in 2012.
Mr Quashigah told Citi FM that despite the
happenings in the NDC, the party is still united
and focussed on delivering on its Better Ghana
Agenda. He said contrary to reports of insults and
perceived acrimony between the Rawlingses and
President Mills, the party would come out of their
congress and win the 2012 elections convincingly.
“I want to assure you that all this will come to
an end after the congress. The NDC will remain one
united party after the congress and the NPP’s
expectations and dreams would be an illusion...NDC
is performing and Ghanaians know it”.
