The border between Ghana and Burkina Faso. Burkina-Ghana border re-opened Burkina Faso has opened its side of the border
with Ghana to allow the free movement of goods and
persons between the two West African neighbours.
The Burkinabe authorities closed their side of the
border following disturbances in that country. An
army mutiny erupted on Thursday April 14, when
soldiers and presidential guards in the capital
Ouagadougou protested about unpaid housing
allowances.
Several Ghanaian traders, as well as hundreds of
trucks loaded with goods were reported trapped at
the Paga border in the Upper East Region. Mr Mark
Woyongo, the regional Minister, who visited the
Paga border on Tuesday April 19 told Citi News
normalcy had been restored, with a smooth movement
of human and vehicular traffic at the border.
“I had a long chat with the Customs boss, it was
on Sunday, a lot of people were stranded because
the Burkinabe officials had closed their side of
the border. There was a very long queue of
vehicles on our side but when I was there on
Tuesday April 19, a lot of vehicles were
crossing.
"In fact 24 tomato trucks, these market queens who
go across to buy tomatoes, crossed from our side
into Burkina Faso to buy tomatoes. 43 vehicles
loaded with tomatoes also entered Ghana from
Burkina Faso.
“The tension has eased considerably even though
I hear there were gunshots in Burkina Faso; there
has been a considerable decrease in the tension in
that country”.
