Police swoop on drug peddlers A combined team of military and police personnel
on Wednesday morning April 20, locked down parts
of the Tudu market in Accra as part of a move to
round up alleged drug peddlers and addicts in and
around the Central Business District.
When Citi News arrived at the scene, close to
fifty suspects had been packed in police and
military vans and taken away.
According to security officials, the area has
become a hub for dealers in hard drugs hence the
operation to arrest them at random and prosecute
those found culpable.
Citi FM’s Richard Sky, who was at the scene said
residents and customers who had visited the Tudu
Market were terrified as both men and women were
subjected to thorough search.
According to him, the entrance and exit points of
the market and some access roads were blocked in
the course of the search.
Some persons who were searched accused the
soldiers of manhandling them.
A young woman who had gone to buy clothes at the
Tudu Market told Citi News because she was a woman
only her bag was thoroughly searched while her
male colleagues were ordered to empty their
pockets and were also patted down before being
allowed to go. She told Citi News she was
returning home because she was too terrified.
Security agencies in the Greater Accra Region have
identified the Tudu area in Accra as a notorious
hide out and market place for drug users and
peddlers.
Police and military chiefs in the city have thus
begun a serious crackdown on drug peddlers and
users operating within and outside the Tudu area.
