54-year old chief writes BECE Not even his status as a chief who has advanced in
age could deter Nana Brafo Ababio from achieving
his lifetime ambition of becoming literate in
order to be a transformational figure in his
community.
It was therefore a dream come true when Nana
Ababio, Chief of Abonsrakrom in the Dormaa
Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region, who was a
student of the Abonsrakrom M.A. Junior High
School, joined his mates to write the 2011 Basic
Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at age
54.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic after writing his
first paper, he said that he had gone through
difficult moments as an illiterate chief.
“A chief without education is a big problem to
his people”, he said explaining that “it was
sad when I was unable to append my signature on
site plans for people in my area”.
That, among other reasons, according to Nana
Ababio urged him on to start schooling in 2006.
Nana Ababio was grateful to teachers in the town
who assisted him in various ways to enable him to
study to take part in this year’s BECE.
The chief, who said he dropped out of school at
the primary level, encouraged the youth to take
advantage of the numerous educational
opportunities today and let the sky be their limit
in the pursuit of their education.
He plans to pursue second cycle education if he is
successful at the BECE.
Touring the examination centres in the
municipality, the Dormaa Municipal Chief
Executive, Mr Vincent Oppong Asamoah, appealed to
parents to let the education of their children be
their number one priority to enable them to be
responsible citizens in future.
He asked them to learn from the example of Nana
Brafo Ababio, who had proved to the world that
education had no limit while “it is never too
late to learn”.
Mr Asamoah who was accompanied by the Municipal
Director of Education, Mr James Kusi, told parents
in particular, that the government would continue
to provide necessary infrastructure and logistics
to enhance teaching and learning, particularly in
the rural areas of the country. Source - Daily Graphic
