Alex Segbefia, Deputy Chief of Staff Presidency unfazed by Konadu resignation - Segbefia The Presidency says it is not surprised at the
resignation of former First Lady, Nana Konadu
Agyemang-Rawlings, from her position as an NDC
Vice Chairperson, and neither is the president
worried by the likelihood of running against the
wife of the founder of the party on whose ticket
he was elected President of Ghana.
Nana Konadu announced her decision in a letter to
the national executives of the NDC, which was
leaked to the media. In the letter, dated April
13, 2011 and copied to among others the founder of
the party, Mrs Rawlings said the move will
“enable” her “respond to numerous calls on
her to contest the Flag bearer ship of the NDC
when nominations are opened.”
However, Mr Alex Segbefia, a Deputy Chief of Staff
in the Office of the President told Citi News the
Presidency is in no way troubled by news of Nana
Konadu’s resignation.
“It doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone
because at the end of the day it has always been
almost clear that there has been some interest in
that direction from the former first lady, not
necessarily from her but from her supporters.”
Mr Segbefia, who is part of the President’s
entourage touring the Ashanti region, said the
President remained on course to deliver on his
electoral promises and was “not going to be
deviated.”
Meanwhile, Major (rtd) Boakye Gyan, a former
Rawlings ally under the Armed Forces Revolutionary
Council Military junta, has told Citi News the
former first lady has made what he calls “a
wrong move.”
“I think that the move is a wrong move in the
sense that it still shows the aspect of her
character that she’s not confident about wanting
to lead this country. It doesn’t show
decisiveness, a vital attribute of a leader of a
nation because i happen to know that she’s been
nursing this ambition for so long, so what is
holding her back?
“The correct thing for her to have done was to
have taken the decision to run and then resigned
her position giving the excuse that holding that
position at that time would be incompatible with
her declaration, but to do it the other way round
is to put the cart before the horse and what does
that portray? She is still hesitant.
“Why is she hesitant, why is she not taking the
correct decision? She is not the type of person
under whose leadership I would be glad to live
under” he told Citi News.
