My husband has always supported my ambition - Nana Konadu
The Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman
Rawlings, has stated without equivocation that her
husband, former President Jerry John Rawlings, has
always supported her ambition to become President
of Ghana.

According to the founder of the 31st December
Women’s Movement, the de-facto women's wing of
the NDC, she takes no major decision without
consulting and seeking the guidance of her
husband. She added that her decision to resign
from her position is just to put a few things
right in her plan to vie for the NDC
flagbeareship.

“My husband, the former President and Founder of
the party is solidly behind me. There’s no way I
would start doing something without thinking it
through with him. He advices and directs me before
taking any decision. He would have to agree before
I can hit my chest and say I’m going to do
something. Before he also gives me that assurance
it would be after he has consulted with some party
members and elders who may not be known” she
stated in an interview with Tema-based Adom FM on
Thursday April 14.

The former first lady resigned from her position
as a Vice Chairperson of the ruling NDC on
Wednesday April 13, sending out a clear signal
that she is set to challenge President Mills in
the 2012 elections.

Her resignation may not come as a shock to many
though, particularly when her husband, who founded
the NDC, has continuously condemned the
performance of the Mills-Mahama administration,
and allegedly urged party executives to reject the
sitting President in 2012.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings revealed in her
interview with Adom FM, “For now, my resignation
from the position of the Vice Chairman of the
great NDC is more important to me and I’ve done
so in order to put a few things in order. That is
more important to me.

“Majority of the members of the party know where
the party is headed, only a few are unaware of the
focus of the party and where it is headed”.

The disclosure by the former first lady confirms
speculations that ex President Rawlings is
covertly campaigning for his wife to challenge
President Mills for the flagbearership of the NDC
with his constant criticism of the Mills
administration.

Nana Konadu, who spoke Twi, added that she
foresees a very bright future for the ruling NDC
under her leadership.

“The NDC has an exceptionally bright future and
that is something I’m very sure of”
