Mr. Rawlings has over the years had a good rapport with the people of the Volta Region

Volta NDC swerves Rawlings, declares support for Mills
Executives of the ruling National Democratic
Congress have disregarded the party’s rules and
declared their unalloyed support for President
Mills’ second term bid, ahead of the party’s
primaries in July.

Typically, one would have thought that the Volta
Region, which strongly admires Mr. Rawlings and
not just the NDC, would have backed his choice of
candidate, but it appears the party Founder’s
perceived campaign against President Mills,
presumably to back the ambitions of Konadu
Rawlings, is hitting the rocks.

Mr. Rawlings, who has ceaselessly passed judgment
on the performance of the Mills administration, is
alleged to have urged NDC executives in the
Ashanti Region to reject President Mills in 2012.

At that meeting, he is also reported to have
withdrawn his support for the man he introduced
onto the political scene. But few days after he
left the Region, the entire executives declared
full support for President Mills.

The party has fixed July 8-10 to pick a suitable
candidate for the 2012 elections, but it appears
there will be more declarations from other regions
even before nominations are opened.

Announcing their support at a news conference in
Ho on Tuesday April 12, the Volta Regional
Chairman of the NDC Kwesi Aboagye noted that it
will be suicidal for President Mills to be
replaced in 2012.

“We of the Volta Region wish to declare out
unflinching support for the President, His
Excellency John Evans Atta Mills and his
Government. We wholeheartedly endorse the
President’s candidature for the 2012
presidential election. We are convinced that with
the level of trend of development which the NDC
Government is bringing to all sectors of the
economy, Ghanaians will readily support and vote
for him".

“Any attempt to change the sitting President as
the candidate of the NDC will be politically
suicidal. We in the Volta Region pledge to do
everything possible to ensure and resounding and
rousing victory for President John Evans Atta
Mills in the 2012 General election” he stated.

Mr. Aboagye said although their action offends the
party’s rules, it has almost become inevitable
following recent developments in the party which
is obstructing the President from delivering on
his better Ghana agenda.

The news conference was attended by key members of
Government including the Tourism Minister, Deputy
Local Government Minister, National Propaganda
Secretary as well as the Volta Regional Minister
and his deputy.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, a Vice Chairman of
the NDC, has hinted that she has plans to contest
the sitting president.

But it appears her intention coupled with the
nonstop attack on President Mills’ performance
by Ex President Rawlings, is courting sympathy for
the sitting President.
