BECE begins Monday
Schools in Ashanti region battle-ready for BECE exams As preparations reach a peak for this year’s
Basic Education Certificate Examinations, some
teachers and candidates in Kumasi are resorting to
both physical and spiritual means to psyche
themselves up for the task.
Seventy-six thousand, nine hundred and ninety-two
(76,492) candidates are expected to write the
examination in the Ashanti region alone which
begins on Monday at 286 centers.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is presenting the
largest number of candidates.
A visit to some schools in the Kumasi metropolis
reveal that besides extra classes for candidates,
some school heads have also been organizing prayer
sessions for divine support.
The spiritual exercise is conducted in
collaboration with the local council of churches
in some communities.
Schools authorities are convinced the candidates
are battle-ready for the five-day exercise which
will decide their progression on the academic
ladder.
A Chaplain at Asem Mixed School, Vida Sarfo said
the spiritual exercise combined with extra classes
has helped a lot.
According to her, they sing, pray and give praises
to almighty God at each prayer session to psyche
up the pupils to prepare their minds for the task
ahead.
"After normal classes we do extra classes for
them, then on Saturdays, some of the teachers also
come to help them (the candidates)", she said.
"We organize these church services to prepare
their minds, to give them the courage and it is
helping us a lot", she explained.
Some candidates who shared their experience on how
prepared they are for the exams said all is set.
None of the respondents said they were afraid or
panicking.
Regional Controller of the West African
Examinations Council, William Amexo, said all
materials have been distributed to the various
examination centers.
He warned candidates against cheating and any
malpractices to avoid sanctions.
Mr. Amexo is hopeful this year’s exams will be
without any challenge as candidates comport
themselves and remain disciplined.
Meanwhile, the Kumasi Polytechnic has been
providing free counseling to BECE candidates.
Members of the Community Service Committee have
been visiting Basic Schools in the catchment area
of the polytechnic to offer tips and encouragement
ahead of the exams.
Assistant Registrar, Robert Kyei-Gyawu says the
move is to put the services of the polytechnic at
the door steps of residents in its catchment
area.
He said it is one of the initiatives of the new
Rector, Professor Nicholas Nsowah-Nuamah to make
the relevance of the Kumasi Polytechnic felt by
the people. Source - Nhyirafm
