‘I did not ignore Mills at the NEC meeting' - Konadu Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, has flatly refuted
reports in sections of the media that she failed
to acknowledge the presence of President Mills
during Friday’s National Executive Council
meeting at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra.
The rift between the two NDC bigwigs appears to be
growing following reports that Mrs. Rawlings
intends to contest President Mills ahead of the
2012 polls.
Followers of the President are unhappy with the
party’s Founder Jerry Rawlings over his
incessant criticism of the Government and a recent
assertion he is alleged to have made withdrawing
his support for President Mills’ bid in 2012,
presumably to support his wife.
Mr. Rawlings is reported to have urged party
executives in the Ashanti Region to reject
President Mills, but the executives have done the
opposite and declared their unalloyed support for
the sitting President.
At the emergency NEC meeting yesterday, the
atmosphere was said to be tensed with the former
President, his wife, President Mills and key
members of the NDC in attendance.
Fallouts from the meeting that set a date of July
8-10 to elect the party’s Flagbearer, Nana
Konadu is reported to have ignored President Mills
when he entered the venue for the event by
refusing to stand up.
But Mrs. Rawlings in an interview with Joy FM’s
News File programme this morning said the reports
are incorrect.
“What happened was that, we were all sitting
down chatting away and I was on my cell phone
sending a text message and the gentleman sitting
next to me got up. So I asked him if he was
leaving, and he said President Mills was coming so
I asked where he was coming from and then I got up
with him. So that’s about it. He got up before
me. I think he even didn’t see the President
because his coming was not announced. I was
surprised to hear this morning that I refused. I
am sorry; I am not brought up that way. I think
that I have been pretty much brought up well and I
don’t do things like that.
Asked whether she would have stood up if the
President’s arrival had been announced, “Mrs.
Rawlings responded “Of course! Even if it had
not been announced and I had seen him, I would
have stood up because that is the right thing to
do” she noted.
Mrs. Rawlings, whose presidential ambition is
almost known to many Ghanaians, again refused to
answer in the affirmative when she was questioned
about it, except to say that when nomination opens
from May 3-10, she would decide. Source - Citifmonline
