Ashanti NDC declares support for Mills
Regional and Constituency executives of the ruling
National Democratic Congress in the Ashanti
Region, have declared support for President Mills
to seek re-election ahead of the party’s
Presidential primaries in July 2011.

The decision which was taken at an emergency
meeting on Friday April 8 has the backing of the
Regional Minister, District and Metropolitan Chief
Executives.

It came few days after ex-President Rawlings met
the executives and allegedly asked them to reject
a second term bid for President Mills because in
his view he has failed to live up to expectation.

Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the Party
Kweku Boahene told Citi News that Rawlings'
comments are now in the past and the executives
are looking forward into the future.

He said after extensive deliberations the
executives resolved to throw their weight behind
the President Mills considering the good works he
has done.

He said without the sitting President, the NDC
cannot retain power. President Mills is expected
to visit the Ashanti Region on Tuesday April 12 as
part of a nationwide tour.

Asked why they chose to defy the party’s laid
down regulations which disallow executives from
declaring their support unless a Flagbearer is
picked, Mr. Kweku Boahene could not give a
definite answer except to say that the President
needs to be reassured that he has their full
support so that he can concentrate on his work.

“We cannot do anything without the support of
Prof Atta Mills and in this coming election,
anybody who wants to contest will base his
argument on the achievements and performance of
Prof Atta Mills and we have seen that what Prof
Atta Mills is doing is better for the party and
the country at large and it is time for us to
throw our support for him so that when he sleeps
he will not think that he doesn’t have support
in the Ashanti Region,” he said.

Editor of the Daily Dispatch Newspaper and
Pollster Ben Ephson says the declaration by the
Ashanti Region executives was not surprising,
predicting a lot more executives in the various
regions and constituencies will declare sooner or
later for one aspirant or another.

Meanwhile the party has announced the date for its
presidential primaries. The congress will be held
on July 8, 9, and 10, 2011 at Sunyani.

Nomination will be opened on May 3-10, 2011.
