After break-up of NUGS, GUPS next? The confusion that hit the National Union of Ghana
Students leading to a split of the mother of all
student’s body in the country, is beginning to
have an impact on other students bodies, as a
similar development has rocked the Ghana Union of
Professional Students (GUPS).
The Union’s General Secretary Emefa Agonyo is
said to have circulated some information
concerning the removal of its President Jonas
Akese from office, at a certain General Assembly
Meeting which was chaired by her on the 16th of
March, 2011, at the Ghana School of Survey and
Mapping (GSSM).
But the National Secretariat in a release copied
to Adom News on Thursday, unequivocally stated
that the actions of the General Secretary is not
binding on the Secretariat.
The release was jointly signed by Coordinating
Secretary Abena Obuo Adisi, Treasurer; Andrews N.
B. Adom, Women’s Commissioner; Diana N. A.
Adarkwah, Programmes & Projects Coordinator;
Cosmos Acquah Jnr, President; Jonas Akesse as well
as Press & Information secretary; Adwoa A. Owusu.
“She acted alone without the knowledge and
consent of the Secretariat. As far as we are
concerned, there has not been any General Assembly
meeting and we, therefore, call on the general
public, cherished member institutions, Ministries,
Departments and Agencies, and all affiliates of
the Union to disregard the unfortunate
misinformation”, the statement said.
The statement stressed that the National
Secretariat recognizes only one President (Jonas
Akese) who is at post and effectively carrying out
his constitutional obligations.
