400 Newmont workers to be sacked About 400 workers of Newmont Gold Ghana Limited
(NGGL) will be dismissed early next year as part
of measures to cut down staff strength of the
company in view of the persistent falling price of
gold on the world market
The Complaints Officer of Newmont, Mr. James Oduro
Baffour who disclosed this at first session of the
first ordinary meeting of the Asutifi North
District Assembly at Kenyasi in the Brong Ahafo
region, said the move is part of measures to
contain the prevailing harsh economic conditions
in the country .
“There are, however, plans to expand our
operations next year after securing the green
light from government. We will carry out public
hearing with all stakeholders.
"As major partners, it is my desire for the
assembly members to help with the education and
advocacy to solicit views and ideas from residents
in our operational area”, he emphasized.
He expressed worry over the continuous fall in
prices of gold on the world market, coupled with
high cost of production stating that it had
drastically reduced profit margins culminating in
the reduction of his outfit’s investment in
social interventions for beneficiary communities.
“It is because of this we will be sacking 400
people early next year so that the company is not
plunged into huge operational debts”, he stated
Mr. Eric Addae, the District Chief Executive (DCE)
lamented over the increasing cases of theft and
agitation by workers of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited
(NGGL) over their conditions of service and
commended the District Security Committee (DISEC)
for always acting swiftly to address their
concerns.
Earlier in his address, the Presiding Member (PM)
of the assembly, Nana Owusu Boadu Ayeboafo
encouraged members to share ideas and experiences
to enrich the debate in the house and pleaded with
the assembly to provide logistics to the personnel
in the district to efficiently and effectively
execute their mandate. Source - Starrfm
