The Best Mortgage On Line

BORROWERS should find it easier to track down the best mortgage deal following the launch yesterday of a complete online home-loan service, writes Sarah Toyne.

John Charcol, an independent broker, has created an integrated internet service that allows you to search, select and apply online for a mortgage. You can choose from 300 loans from more than 25 lenders, representing 70% of the market. Participants include Abbey National, Halifax, Egg, Nationwide, Standard Life and Woolwich. Online applications are restricted to about 60% of the mortgages on offer, but the number is to increase soon.

Toby Strauss, managing director of Charcol Online, says: "A mortgage is probably your biggest single financial commitment. Easy access to impartial advice is vital."

The service aims to be consumer friendly. There are three sections: a guide to buying a home, finding the right mortgage and a remortgage service, which gives you a formal offer within 24 hours.

If you are trying to find the right home loan, the Mortgage Wizard will take you through a series of questions designed to match you with the most suitable deal. It will, for example, ask for details of your income and whether you want a fixed, discounted or capped home loan.

The service also includes 32 exclusive deals, which have been negotiated with 13 lenders, including Woolwich and Bank of Scotland. The loans offer cheaper rates and special terms and conditions.

If you approach the lender direct, however, they are under no obligation to tell you that you can get a better morgtage through a broker.

If you are in need of help at any stage, or are unsure of the technology, there is a telephone helpline.
