Accra (Greater Accra) 02 November 2002-A seven-day photo exhibition dubbed "Accra: The destination," which aimed at depicting some of the capital's landmarks opened in Accra.

The exhibition, organised by the Accra Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB), a tourists centre, forms part of activities to mark Accra Tourism Week, a community awareness programme to highlight the benefits and importance of tourism in the region and the country.

Nana Akomea, Deputy Minister of Tourism, said the exhibition was pioneering efforts by the ACVB to project Accra as a city of culture. He said Accra was faced with lots of problems such as public places of convenience, lack of proper street names and other social amenities, which needed to be tackled to encourage tourism.

He, therefore, called on the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) and Assemblymen to provide these amenities, especially public places of convenience in the city centre to discourage people from polluting the environment.

"There are lots of problems facing the city of Accra but as the citizens are becoming focus, they would put pressure on the authorities to give it a new outlook," he added. Nana Akomea said the Ministry would give its support to the AVC and urged other tourist organisations to take the cue from them to make Accra a better city.

Pa John Dadson, Executive Director of Accra Convention and Visitors Bureaux, said the exhibition was to sensitise the people of Accra to appreciate what tourism could do for the city.
