Police may rescind decision to leave Donkorkrom if… IGP
The Inspector General Police (IGP), John Kudalor,
has indicated the administration may review its
decision to withdraw personnel from Donkorkrom and
its surrounding communities, after a security
assessment today [Monday].

According to the IGP, he has received petitions
calling for a review of the decision but will only
go ahead to review it after his assessment of the
situation on the ground.

The police administration last week, announced a
withdrawal of its personnel from Donkorkrom and
other communities, following an attack on its
barracks and police station by some angry
residents.

The residents were protesting against the police
for the escape of two police officers alleged to
have attacked and tried to rob a GCB bullion van.

IGP Kudalor spoke to Citi News’ Franklin Badu
Jnr saying, “It depends. It is only a fool that
doesn’t change his mind. I want to go there and
assess it. If they say something that we feel is
commendable… why not. We may give them
conditions and deadlines but we will see how it
goes.”

He however maintained that the police did not err
in its decision to withdraw its men from the area
following the unrest.

According to him, “this is not the first time a
police station has been closed down. As I said,
this one was closed down because it was vandalized
so people get the kind of policing that they want.
If they want to cooperate with the policing, it is
a shared responsibility.”

Background

The attempted robbery led to the death of the
driver of the van after a heated exchange of
gunfire between the police officer in the van and
the suspects.

The escapees were later captured at their hideouts
and have subsequently been sent to the Police
National Headquarters in Accra.

Prior to their capturing, some residents in areas
where the incident occurred on Thursday went on
rampage and vandalized some Police stations at
Donkorkrom and Tease to demand the speedy arrest
of the fugitives.

They reportedly ended up setting ablaze the
Donkorkrom Police station and pelted the officers
with stones leading to the Police’s decision to
withdraw from the area.
