Taxi driver rapes visually impaired, 90
A taxi driver and resident of Kokoteasua, a suburb
of Obuasi, is standing trial at a Kumasi High
Court for raping a 90-year-old blind woman.

Peter Kwaku Anto is alleged to have sneaked into
the room of the old lady, who was staying alone,
at night to commit the crime.

He pleaded not guilty to the rape charge preferred
against him and the court, presided over by
Justice Charles Adjei Wilson, remanded him into
prison custody.

Facts

According to the facts presented to the court at
this year’s Criminal Assizes currently ongoing
in Kumasi by the Assistant State Attorney, Nana
Konadu Owusu Banahene, the complainant in the
case, Akua Gyasiwaah, is the daughter of the
victim and lives at Obuasi New Estate, while the
victim lives by herself at Nyamebekyere, both
suburbs of Obuasi.

She said somewhere in 2014, Anto assisted the
victim to retrieve her National Health Insurance
Scheme (NHIS) Card from the Obuasi office of the
scheme and the two became friends.

Nana Banahene said based on this friendship, Anto
started visiting the victim occasionally after
work.

However, she said the victim started complaining
to Gyasiwaah that she had not been sleeping well
as someone had been entering her room and been
forcibly sleeping with her.

Consequently, she said on June 18, 2015, the
complainant decided to spend the night with the
victim at her place at Nyamebekyere.

According to the prosecution, while they were
asleep, Anto forcibly pushed the door opened and
entered the room and Gyasiwaah quickly woke up and
started shouting ‘thief, thief, thief’.

The prosecution said Anto responded by saying that
he was not a thief but had only brought the
victim’s NHIS card to her.

However, he was unable to produce the card.

Nana Banahene explained that it was during the
interrogation that the victim heard the accused
person’s voice and identified him to be the one
who had been sneaking into the room to rape her.

Anto was arrested the following day at a family
gathering where he had brought some elders to
plead on his behalf.

Medical examination

According to the prosecution, a medical
examination conducted on the victim showed rape
and syphilis.

The victim was thus put on medication.

Counsel

Counsel for Anto, Rev. Sam Gaborah, disagreed with
the prosecution.

He said the facts were one way and mere
allegations and that at the appropriate time, the
defence would also tell its story and present its
facts.
