Drivers declare nationwide strike Road transport operators in Ghana have declared a
nationwide strike beginning next Monday, February
8.
The operators whose membership includes the Ghana
Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) and the
Ghana Roads Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC)
are protesting the increase in motor insurance
premium.
The Ghana Insurance Association (GIA) and the
Ministry of Finance agreed on a 300% increase in
insurance premium in July 2015 and it is being
implemented in two phases.
Speaking at a news conference in Accra on Tuesday,
however, the operators said they “were not
informed about the directive and must be
reversed.”
The drivers led by their chairman Charles Danso
said the Insurance Commission is not “being fair
to them,” especially when they are not
benefitting from the insurance and other transport
related charges.
They said they are not ready to pay anything more
than 250% if the NIC does not reverse the policy.
The operators also hinted they will commence their
own insurance firm which will see to their needs
because they feel “cheated” by the status quo. Source - Starrfmonline
