Kufuor sad over NPP's crisis;urges calm
Ex President John Kufuor has broken his silence on
the rumpus in the opposition New Patriotic Party
and has rallied members to unite.
In a statement the ex-president said he finds it
disquieting that issues that ought to have been
discussed in the privacy of the party's
headquarters have found their way into the public
domain.
Despite being out of the country, the ex-president
said he has had cause to speak with some rank and
file of the party to calm nerves.
The party has been in stormy waters over the last
few weeks with a sustained drama of accusation and
counter accusation between high ranking members of
the party.
In the Upper East region there was initially some
disagreement between the Regional Chairman Adams
Mahama and the National Chairman Paul Afoko and
General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong resulting in
the scuttling of a meeting.
The two national executives later lodged assault
complaints against the party's youth who they
accused of scuttling the meeting.
A week later Adams Mahama was attacked with acid
and died later the following day.
The attack and death have further deepened the
crisis in the party with calls on the two
beleaguered national executives to resign. They
have refused to badge.
There have been clashes at the party's
headquarters, Thursday between factions loyal to
the two executives and a group of party supporters
who call themselves as the invincible forces.
Two people were injured in the clashes.
In the mist of the crisis there have been calls on
Ex-president John Kufuor to intervene to calm
nerves.
He has issued a statement, expressing his deepest
worry and sadness over what is going on in the
party.
He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved
family of the late Adams Mahama and asked party
members to desist from making acrimonious
allegations against party members.
He also urged the party to allow the police to
complete its investigation into the murder of the
late Mahama and not to preempt the outcome.
