Beautiful Mind maths virtuoso John Nash killed in taxi crash
John Forbes Nash, the acclaimed mathematician,
Nobel prizewinner and subject of the Academy
Award-winning biopic A Beautiful Mind, has been
killed with his wife in a car crash.

Nash, 86, was travelling with his wife of 60
years, Alicia, 82, in a taxi on the New Jersey
Turnpike on Saturday afternoon.

The couple were thrown out of the vehicle when it
collided with another car. One local newspaper
website, NJ.com, reported that the couple appeared
not to have been wearing seatbelts.

New Jersey police said that the taxi driver had
lost control as he tried to overtake a Chrysler.

He was treated in hospital for non-life
threatening injuries, while a passenger in the
Chrysler was treated for neck pain.

Nash was best known for his work in game theory,
which is the study of strategic decision-making,
for which he won the Nobel Prize for economics in
1994.

Ten years later he was immortalised in A Beautiful
Mind in the wake of the Pulitzer prizewinning book
of the same name by Sylvia Nasar.

The film charts Nash’s struggles with paranoid
schizophrenia over the course of his career, and
his wife’s care for him over the period.

Nash, who was awarded the highly regarded Abel
Prize in mathematics earlier this year, was a
senior research mathematician at Princeton
University in his later years

Russell Crowe, who played the mathematicision in A
Beautiful Mind, responded on Twitter: “Stunned
... my heart goes out to John & Alicia & family.

“An amazing partnership. Beautiful minds,
beautiful hearts.”
