The National Council of the New Patriotic Party
(NPP) will meet today to review some controversial
policies put in place by the National Executive
Committee (NEC) regarding the impending
parliamentary primaries.
The party will consider whether it should reverse
the controversial decision seeking to disqualify
men from contesting in constituencies where there
are sitting female Members of Parliament (MPs) of
the party.
The decision has left the party deeply divided
with some members threatening legal action.
A member of the party Prince Ntiamoah Boampong
said prospective aspirants should be given the
opportunity to choose their leaders without being
imposed on and that the rights of individuals will
be violated if the directive is followed through.
The party’s flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa
Akufo-Addo has been consulting broadly on the
matter and a
final decision is expected today.
However, ahead of the meeting by the party's
highest decision-making body, the party’s MP for
Akuapin South and chairman of parliament’s
subsidiary legislation committee, Osei Bonsu Amoah
says the new policy must be maintained.
He said the party should not expect that its
members will readily accept the proposal, “some
people will definitely say that we are
discriminating and giving unfair advantage to
females”, he added.
The party in his view must stand firm on the
decision and that the members of the party will
come to appreciate the decision.
