Teachers declare strike over litany of concerns
Three teacher unions – National Association of
Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned
Teachers (CCT), and Ghana National Association of
Teachers (GNAT) – have declared an indefinite
strike.

They are demanding payment of their vehicle
maintenance allowance and salary arrears, which,
according to them, have not been paid for several
months.

The teachers are also up in arms against the
finance ministry for what they describe as its
“interference” in the work of the Education
Ministry.

The finance ministry is supposed to appraise the
performance of the Teachers and other public
sector workers before payments are made, but that
process has not happened, thus stalling
adjustments in salaries – a situation the
teachers bemoan.

They also complain of non-payment of transfer
grants meant for their colleagues who have
relocated and need to take their families along.

Already, they are part of an ongoing public sector
strike involving 12 unions. The over 800,000
public sector workers say they will persist with
the strike until the government releases their
tier two pension contributions to them for private
management.
