Recycling of waste surest way to deal with filth problem - Help Change Ghana
Help Change Ghana (HCG) - a nonprofit organization
dedicated to the development, expansion and
promotion of environmental sanitation is
advocating the prioritization of waste recycling
as the surest way to deal with the filth problem
in the country.

The organization is worried that for many years
now, Ghana has failed to deal with the increasing
poor sanitation problem decisively, due to the
attitude of the populace.

It also identified the advent of sachet water and
other polythene wrappers used for packaging food
as a major source of the filth problem.

In the light of this, Help Change Ghana as part of
activities to mark Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah 105
th Birthday Anniversary last week, initiated a
campaign to educate traders on waste reduction at
the Osu Night Market in Accra.

The traders were educated on the need to minimize
the amount of materials they use in packaging
foods which ends up as waste at the limited
landfill sites.

Public Relations Manager of Help Change Ghana, Mr.
Ebenezer Annoh told the traders: “since
packaging materials account for a large volume of
the trash we generate, there is the need to keep
in mind that as the amount of product in a
container increases, the packaging waste per
serving or use usually decreases.”

Executive Chairman, Elijah Mensah told the traders
they even stand to benefit economically if they do
not use unnecessary polythene materials and papers
to serve customers. “In this way, sellers can
make a profit margin if packaging is done
appropriately”, he said.

He noted the need for all persons to get
interested in waste recycling, as the best means
of waste disposal.

The team members visited various stalls to teach
the traders about when not to double wrap a
purchase. The market Queen expressed appreciation
to the HCG team for the awareness campaign and
knowledge acquired.
