Mahama petitioned over planned demolition of 700 homes
Residents of Donkuna New Bortianor near Weija in
Accra are asking President John Dramani Mahama to
intervene and avert an impending demolition of
more than 700 homes by estate developer Alrotec
Limited.

The residents who have been living in the area for
the past 10 years say the demolition must be
stopped since a court order that grants the
company the right to demolish the structures is
still being challenged.

They claim the demolition is against the orders of
an Accra Fast Track High Court, which has
scheduled October 17 for the next hearing of the
case. The case was first heard in court in 2003.

According to TV3, notices have been posted on
buildings in the area regarding the demolition and
the home owners are incensed that the
order authorizing the demolition described their
homes as “structures”.

“The land is fully developed with all sorts of
mansions comparable to those at Cantoments,
Airport residential area, East Legon and
Dzorwulu”, spokesman for the residents Nii
Adotey Allotey told JOYNEWS

In his view, demolition is not the solution
because “the values of those houses far
outweighs the land under consideration”.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga South
Municipal Assembly is reported to have said that
the land belongs to Alrotech and that he (MCE)
cannot do anything about it.

He rather directed the residents to submit an
official writing to challenge the ownership of
Alrotech, a frustrated home owner reported the MCE
as saying.

In recent times, demolition exercises are pitching
citizens against local authorites.

Memories of the demolition of about 150 houses at
Adjei Kojo by the Tema Development Corporation,
TDC, earlier this year is still fresh in the minds
of many Ghanaians. The TDC said the residents had
encroached on the property which had been
earmarked for a special purpose.

Ten houses were also demolished last February at
Agya Herbal, a neighbourhood of Ofankor in Accra,
on the orders of an Accra High court.
