This contempt 'animal' shouldn't turn us into cowards - Baako
It's obvious that what has become a known term in
Ghana's political circles as "Montie 3 saga" may
pose daunting challenges to journalistic work in
the nation.

Naked apprehension in the line of duty by media
practitioners may become very evident now as the
country awaits the sentencing of the Montie FM
contemnors, amidst fears that any lenghty
conviction could gag the media in the discharge of
its work.

This is why veteran journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku
Baako is calling on media practitioners not to
live in fear of or shrink away from national
issues simply because of the recent contempt suit;
but strive to be consistent and ensure they
provide a credible, fair and accurate reportage at
all times.

Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Mr. Baako
noted that though media practitioners must learn
lessons from the fate of the contemnors; they
however should not become cowered into silence.

He hoped that the Montie FM contempt case would
not lead to a culture of silence where journalists
cannot express their views or make level-headed
analysis of issues.

“I’m praying that the lessons will not be
leading to a situation where we go into a culture
of cowardice and silence. It shouldn’t happen.
We need a robust free speech and expression to
make the democracy very vibrant. Of course, I’m
not calling for irresponsible speech making,” he
stressed.

Kweku Baako further reiterated his plea with the
Supreme Court Judges not to lock away the three
Montie FM trio.

He strongly believes they will not repeat their
mistakes, saying "I’m talking in terms of their
individual experiences. I don’t see how these
guys will go and sit on radio, and say the same
kind of things they said.”
