National Council for Tertiary Education backs Students on Utility Tariffs
The National Council for Tertiary Education
insists it is improper for Medical students of the
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
(KNUST) to be charged throat-cutting utility
bills.

Students undergoing clinical training at the Komfo
Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have been billed
an amount of GH¢ 1,000 each for resident students
and GH¢ 150 for non-residents as utility bills.

The stated amount excludes Junior Common Room
(JCR) dues which is yet to be determined by the
appropriate authorities with students expected to
pay before May 31, 2016.

The students have however described the fees as
astronomical, ill timed, harsh and unjustifiable
as no decision has been reached by government to
pass on the cost to the students.

The Executive Secretary of the National Council
for Tertiary Education, Professor Mohammed Salifu
indicates the fees ought not to be charged the
students.

“The latest fees is contrary is what has been
agreed. A committee was formed to find out the
modalities for payment of the utilities fees by
the student. It looks like the university is
passing on all the cost to the students”, he
revealed

Professor Mohammed indicates that a working
committee is currently considering a cost sharing
agreement to be implemented by government. He
however gives a strong indication that utility for
hostels of residence of students will eventually
be passed on to students.
