‘Dumsor’ can’t be solved completely – Anyidoho
The erratic power supply in Ghana popularly known
as ‘dumsor’, cannot be eliminated completely,
a deputy general secretary of the ruling National
Democratic Congress (NDC) has said.

In the view of Koku Anyidoho, the government can
only help mitigate the situation by adding onto
the available generating capacity but to resolve
it entirely is “impossible”.

“I’m not saying that it (Erratic power supply)
is going to end hundred percent, it cannot, but we
can manage it.

“I have spoken to experts who have said that
most of the investments we have done is to manage
it because it cannot be solved hundred percent and
let’s be frank about it,” the former
presidential spokesperson told Joy FM Thursday.

Ghana is currently shedding between 440 and 650
Megawatts of power during off-peak and peak
periods as a result of a production deficit.

The production shortfall has come about due to
poor hydrology of the three main hydro-electric
power stations – Akosombo, Bui and Kpong – as
well as lack of gas from the West Africa Gas
Pipeline in Nigeria to supply gas to various
thermal plants in the country.

As a result, both domestic and commercial
consumers are bearing the brunt of the crisis,
which Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor recently
promised will end by December 2015.
