Alexander Mawusi Buadi presenting the award to Irene Duncan Adanusa

GNAT honours ex-General Secretary Irene Duncan-Adanusa
A farewell party has been held for the former
General Secretary of the Ghana National
Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mrs Irene Taama
Duncan-Adanusa at the Teachers Hall in Accra.

She served as a General Secretary of the
association for 9 years, from 2002 to 2014.

Among those who attended the party organised by
the association were the General Secretary of the
Trades Union Congress, Mr Kofi Asamoah, the
Chairman of the Ghana Media Commission, Mr Kabral
Blay Amihere and Mr Kwame Pianim, an Economic
Consultant.

Mrs Adanusa and nine other retired teaching and
non-teaching staff of the GNAT Headquarters were
presented with various awards for their
meritorious service to the association.

The teaching staff awarded were Mr Jacob Anderson
and Rev Vincent Addo.

The non-teaching staff were Madam Margaret Nunoo,
Mr Godwin Ayim Tettey, Mr Edward Asare, Mr David
Yeboah, Mr Joseph Manu and Mr James Adansi.

The Acting President of GNAT, Mr Alexander Mawusi
Buadi, reading the citation accompanying Mrs
Adanusa's award, stated that during her term of
office, she worked hard to raise the image of GNAT
in International trades union circles through her
excellent communication and international relation
skills.
"Some of the legacies for which you would be
forever be remembered in GNAT, includes the
Abankro Teachers Village Project, construction of
the fourth floor of the GNAT Headquarters block,
free cancer treatment for teachers, establishment
of GNAT youth programme, the Dream Oval-GNAT ICT
programme for young teachers and souvenirs for
GNAT members" he said.
"Your innovativeness, forthrightness, fortitude
and penchant to achieve are a few of the values
that mark you as a great leader and trade
unionist", Mr Buadi said.
He further stated that for twelve years, Mrs
Adanuda led GNAT to greater heights through
indigenous administrative skills and managed the
affairs of the union with such dexterity and
astuteness that she became a shining example for
other trade unions in Ghana and Africa as a
whole.
Mrs Adanusa thanked all who supported her during
her 21 years service with GNAT as Deputy General
Secretary and General Secretary of GNAT.
She said some of her guiding principles during her
tenure of office were her focus, commitment,
confidence and discipline.
"I fought so many battles and the greatest lesson
was undergoing the study of human behaviour" she
said.
Mrs Adanusa said she always found alternative
solutions to problems to achieve results.
Mr Kofi Asamoah extorted Mrs Adanusa for her
contributions to the labour movement in the
country and said her role in the labour movement
is much appreciated.
He said her role in the leadership struggle of the
country was felt and she would be remembered.
