Uuniversity of Allied Sciences admits first batch of medical students The University of Health and Allied Sciences
(UHAS) has admitted its first batch of medical
students numbering 43.
This was announced by the Vice Chancellor of UHAS,
Professor Fred Binka, during the third
matriculation ceremony of the university in Ho
recently.
The medical students formed part of 536 students
admitted out of a total of 2,500 applicants for
the 2014/2015 academic year.
The 536, which represents a 66 percent increase of
students’ intake, comprise of 376 males and 160
females who are pursuing various programmes under
five schools of the university.
The schools include Basic and Biomedical Sciences,
School of Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Allied
Health Sciences and School of Public Health.
UHAS hopes to have eight schools and three
institutes overall.
The Vice Chancellor encouraged the students to
cultivate the spirit of perseverance and never
quit until they achieve their desired goals.
Prof Binka, therefore, assured them that the
university “is a place where you can afford to
try and when you fail the first time, you can be
pardoned and given the opportunity to try again,
similar to an experiment in the laboratory.”
He was hopeful that students will understand the
fact that “…in life, there is not a single
approach to tackling challenges”, stressing that
“others may also cultivate the habit of quitting
when they do not succeed in the first instance but
be motivated to try again. I encourage you not to
ever quit. Do not give up. When you fail, muster
courage to rise up and try again.”
The Vice Chancellor observed that the excellent
tutelage by the internationally acclaimed lectures
of UHAS had already borne some fruits as the
university’s Medical Laboratory Science Students
Association beat their counterparts from the
University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of
Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape
Coast and College of Health Kintampo in a quiz
organised by the Federation of Ghana Medical
Laboratory Science Students Association.
Professor Binka was optimistic that by next year,
UHAS’ permanent site at Sokode-Lokoe would be
ready for use.
He also announced the establishment of an
endowment fund with a seed of GH¢20,000 from
employee contributions.
Cry Over Inadequate Infrastructure
Prof Kofi Anyidoho, Chairman of the University
Council, noted that although he was delighted
about the increment in the students’ population
from an initial 155 in 2012 to over 1,000 this
year, he was equally troubled that “our
facilities have not increased enough to provide
comfortable accommodation for classroom and
laboratory work and for dormitory space and
offices.”
Prof Anyidoho encouraged students to ensure they
graduate successfully as in the case of the
matriculation. The prolific poet also welcomed and
introduced the university’s new registrar, Dr
Cynthia Sena Kpeglo, as she bid the outgoing
registrar, Mr Kofi Siabi-Mensah farewell.
UHAS was established by an Act 828 in December
2011, first batch of students were admitted on
September 28, 2012 and was formally inaugurated by
Vice President Kwesi Amissah Arthur on November
