Akufo-Addo must name Ewes for future Cabinet positions now - Lecturer
The flagbearer of the main opposition New
Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, must name
some Ewes in the party as prospective Cabinet
Ministers ahead of the 2016 elections, a political
science lecturer has suggested.

Dr Richard Amoako Baah, Head of the Department of
History and Political Science of the Kwame Nkrumah
University of Science and Technology (KNUST) told
STARR NEWS Thursday that such a strategy will
dismantle criticisms that the party is pro-Akan
and anti-Ewe.

“I have said that maybe Nana Addo should name
some Ewes already to be in his cabinet, and that
will quell the whole argument”, he said.

According to him, Akufo-Addo’s selection of
Economist Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – Northerner –
as running mate for the third consecutive time, as
well as the party’s election of Paul Afoko as
Chairman – another Northerner – will also help
fight the Akan tag.

“Picking Bawumia is a good strategy because
you’ve heard people say that the NPP is an Akan
party and all of that. Now if the vice
presidential candidate is a Northerner and also
the party chairman is a Northerner, that quells
the whole argument,” Dr Amoako Baah said.

The Volta region – stronghold of the governing
National Democratic Congress – is inhabited by
predominantly Ewes, who consistently vote for the
NDC. The NPP only manages to attract a negligible
amount of votes there.

Currently, 25 of the 26 parliamentary seats in the
region are occupied by NDC MPs. The remaining one
– Akan – which used to be occupied by the NPP,
was won by an NDC member, who run as independent
candidate.

On the other hand, the NPP occupies 43 out of the
total 47 seats in the Ashanti region – its
stronghold – while the NDC occupies the rest -
Asawase, New Edubease, Sekyere Afram Plains and
Ahafo Ano North.
