WILDAF Asks For More Support From Government To Improve Gender Equality
Women in Law and Development in Africa, WilDAF is
calling on the Government of Ghana to support a
standalone goal on gender equality and women’s
rights in the post 2015 development framework.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Accra,
Executive director of gender for empowering
development GenCED, Esther Tawiah disclosed that
gender equality and women’s empowerment in a
post 2015 framework must be prioritize because of
the persuasive injustice faced by women around the
world, with women disproportionately represented
among the poorest and most marginalized.

She explain the rational behind the title
indicating that mainstreaming gender needs
sufficient resources, leadership and political
will, and must be based on targets that transform
social relations and tackles the root causes of
inequality.

Esther made emphasis on the importance of the
standalone goal on gender equality because gender
equality is a goal in itself in the current MDGs
framework, and therefore deserve the political
commitment and dedicated resources.

According to her women account for about two
thirds of the 1.4 billion people globally who live
in extreme poverty without specifically addressing
gender inequality, women’s poverty and global
poverty will persist.

She said though much progress has been made over
decade, there is the need for government to work
effective and efficient to bridge the gap.

She said WilDAF Ghana as part of the nationwide
advocacy has done some level of media advocacy as
well other women’s group on the need to work on
the standalone goal at the UN during the 2014 CSW
58.

Esther said arrangement are far advance by WilDAF
Ghana to submit a memorandum to the ministry of
gender, children and social protection and the
ministry of foreign Affairs to strongly support a
standalone goal on gender in the post 2015
development framework.

She appeal to journalist to use their platform to
advocate and educate the public on the need for a
stand alone goal on gender equality and women’s
rights in post 2015 sustainable development
framework.
