GRASSAG demonstrate over non-payment of thesis grants
The Graduate Students Association of Ghana
(GRASSAG) on Wednesday took to the streets to
protest government’s delay in releasing grants
and bursaries for their thesis.
According to the students, the development had
put undue financial hardships on them and stifling
their project work.
Holding placards, they marched from the Obra Spot
at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra through some
principal streets and ended the march at the Black
Star square where they presented their petition to
the government.
The students had earlier decided to picket at
Flagstaff House on September 21, 2016 to mount
pressure on government for their money but after a
meeting with Education Ministry and assurances
that the monies were going to be paid, they called
off the picketing.
According to the students, they were supposed to
receive the grants in March 2016 but government
has consistently relented on releasing it and even
though there have been series of meetings and
discussions, the amount which was Ghc700 per
student was yet to be released.
They contended that government’s posture was
indicative it was not interested and there seem to
be no urgency towards their plight. They therefore
threatened to embark on ‘worse’ protests.
