Political Thugs Destroy EC Equipment in Kumasi
Thugs believed to have been hired by one of two
major political parties in the country have
destroyed registration equipment at a registration
centre in Kentinkrono a suburb of the Kumasi
Metropolis.

Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral
Commission (EC) Mr Lawrence Sarpong who confirmed
this to Lantam Papanko on the Ultimate Breakfast
Show, bemoaned increasing cases of disruptions by
these thugs at some registration centres in the
ongoing Limited Registration Exercise in the
region.

According to him, three of such cases have so far
been recorded at Ginyaase, Asokore Mampong and
Kentinkrono respectively indicating that they pose
a major challenge to the smooth implementation of
the exercise

“The Commission is set for the second phase of
the exercise which begins on Wednesday and has
made provision for adequate materials but the few
challenges especially disruptions in some areas is
affecting the work of the EC”, he said.

He indicated officials of the EC at the various
centres cannot control the conduct of these
political thugs and will rely on the police to
ensure that peace prevails at the centres for a
smooth registration exercise.

“We are liaising with the police and keep
relying on them for assistance. What is causing
this is that party agents complain of issues at
the registration centres and before we know it,
these thugs storm the areas causing problems for
us”, he added.

The conduct of the thugs he observed are
unpredictable reason his outfit is unable to make
adequate security arrangements to contain them.

He hinted that security will be beefed up at the
centres considered at flash points to ward off
these thugs in the second phase of the second
exercise.

Mr. Sarpong is howver optimistic that police
investigators in the course of time will be able
to unravel the true identity of these thugs and
deal with them within the precincts of the law.
