Don’t declare results ahead of EC – media cautioned
The Electoral Commission of Ghana is asking media
houses to be circumspect in their reportage of
election results during the November polls.
At a media workshop organized by the Ghana
Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) on
“responsible reportage for election 2016”,
Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, Georgina
Opoku Amankwah, said when media houses declare
results of elections ahead of the commission’s
certified results, it creates confusion and
incites supporters of political parties to engage
in violent acts.
“Calling results and declaring results ahead of
the commission’s certified results are recipe
for disaster and as such the media should refrain
from doing such,” she said.
She further explained that the successful conduct
of elections in any country is very critical in
the advancement of democracy, peace and
development.
“The successful conduct of elections in 2016 and
everywhere is critical to the advancement of our
democracy and maintenance of both national as well
as global peace and security.”
Meanwhile the Ghana Independent Broadcasters
Association has hinted that it would be releasing
a code of conduct in June this year to regulate
the activities of media houses.
