Samia: “I’m obviously not happy with the results but I accept them." CPP congress: Samia accuses Greenstreet of vote-buying A defeated presidential aspirant of the Convention
People’s Party (CPP) Samia Nkrumah has said
losing the bid to lead the party in the 2016
elections saddens her.
A former General Secretary of the Nkrumahist party
Ivor Greenstreet pulled a huge surprise with a
landslide victory, having polled 1,288 votes
representing 64.21% as against Samia’s 579
votes. The other candidates Joseph Agyapong and
Bright Akwetey had 83 and 42 votes respectively.
Samia, the daughter of Ghana’s first president,
who was cocksure of winning the primary, has
accused Greenstreet of vote-buying.
“I’m obviously not happy with the results but
I accept them. The fact of the matter is that
every delegate was paid between Gh¢200 and
Gh¢500, so it goes down to money and we can’t
be happy about that,” the former national
chairperson of the CPP told the media after the
declaration of the results.
Her other contender, lawyer Akwetey shares in her
view.
“I didn’t go anywhere beyond Accra… I was
busy in the court. The politicians were going
round and what they did going round I could not do
because I don’t have the funds to do that. What
I felt I could do for my country was what I did. I
didn’t have the kind of money they have to
display,” Akwetey said.
Greenstreet in his victory speech said he will
lead the Nkrumahist party with integrity.
Over 2,500 delegates took part in the congress at
the International Trade Fair Centre Saturday.
