Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

Invite Konadu back home; Rawlings tells NDC delegates
Founder of National Democratic Congress (NDC),
former President Jerry John Rawlings has
challenged the NDC to invite back into its fold
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

The former First Lady after a humiliating defeat
to the late Prof. Atta Mills in the party’s
presidential race defected to the National
Democratic Party (NDP).

The NDP was coincidentally a splitter party of the
NDC, formed largely by apologies of the former
first couple.

But addressing an ongoing national delegates’
congress of the ruling NDC party, Mr. Rawlings
asked the party to take the first step to woo back
his wife.

“Invite our mother Nana Konadu to come back
home. I hope she can hear us, I hope she can see
us. But then again can you blame her?” he asked
rhetorically.

Mr. Rawlings had earlier made a strong case for
the NDC to also encourage Madam Akua Donkor,
founder of Ghana Freedom Party, to join NDC having
confessed of sharing the values of the party.

He also dealt a subtle blow to CPP’s General
Secretary Ivor Greenstreet who had castigated the
NDC on the same platform describing it as an
uncaring government.

Judging the two speeches by Madam Akua Donkor and
Mr. Greenstreet, Mr. Rawlings said he would choose
Akua Donkor over Greenstreet.

“I thank her for all the refreshing things she
had to say. I thank our brother from the CPP also,
but if I make a choice, I think I will stick with
Madam Donkor.”

The former president was also full of praise for
the pedigree and courage of Vice President Paa
Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur.

“Mr. President, thank you for choosing this man.
I have had my quarrels with him in the past, but
when I add the positives and the negatives, I
think the positives far outweigh the negatives,”
Mr. Rawlings observed.

The greatest enemy to the sustainability of the
party is not its external enemy but the
“internal weaknesses and treachery”.

“No enemy can destroy the party,” he remarked
and charged the NDC to do everything possible to
contain those weaknesses.

He also took the opportunity to apologize to
President Mahama and his vice for arriving at the
congress grounds after them: a mishap he blamed on
protocol. While the president and his vice were
driven straight to the venue from the airport, he
was first taken to his hotel, Mr. Rawlings
explained.
