Importers, Exporters to fight G-CAP in court
The Ghana Importers and Exporters Association is
threatening legal action against the Ghana
Standards Authority (GSA) if it goes ahead to
implement the Ghana Conformity Assessment
Programme, G-CAP, on a pilot basis.

G-CAP is a conformity assessment process used to
verify that products imported to Ghana meet
necessary standards.

The Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI)
has been a strong advocate for its suspension.

The Ghana Importers and Exporters Association,
which is also against the G-CAP says piloting the
programme would be a clear violation of World
Trade Organization rules.

Trade Minister Ekow Spio-Garbrah earlier proposed
that the planned implementation be put on hold.

He, however, said on Monday, after a meeting with
the GSA that the Authority could consider
implementing the programme on a pilot basis.

The volte-face has irked the Importers and
Exporters who have threatened going to Court if
the pilot implementation goes ahead.

Their Executive Secretary, Samson Awingoebit told
STARR BUSINESS in an interview that: “We’ll go
to court to test the law.”

Mr Awingoebit added that neigbouring countries’
support must be solicited through broader
consultation for a successful implementation of
the programme.
