NGOs collaborate to promote afforestation Sunyani, GNA - Three non-governmental
organisations have instituted a project to revive
and promote afforestation in the Brong-Ahafo
Region to commemorate the International Day of
Peace celebration.
They are Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF), a human
rights and media advocacy, Think Health
International, and Global Hands on Natural
Environmental Care and Legacy Promotion Centre.
A statement issued in Sunyani on Friday and signed
by Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, Chief Executive
Officer of GLOMEF, said the 'Peace Tree Project'
would be launched at a prayer festival to
commemorate this year's celebration of the
International Day of Peace in Sunyani.
The Day, instituted by the United Nations and
observed on September 21, is devoted to
strengthening the ideals of peace across the
globe.
This year's celebration is on the theme: 'Right of
Peoples to peace'.
According to the statement, the NGOs would support
students, unemployed youth and some civil society
organisations to plant and nurture trees in local
communities.
It explained that the tree planting exercise would
provide a platform to promote peace and social
cohesion in communities.
The statement said peace building was a collective
responsibility and there was the need to empower
local communities to set their own peace building
priorities. Source - GNA
