Air traffic strike: Domestic flights grounded, 100s stranded Domestic flights at all airports in the country
have been grounded while hundreds of air
passengers remain stranded due to a strike by air
traffic controllers.
The strike has created chaos and panic among
passengers at the Kotoka International Airport as
well as other airports across the country.
No planes can take off or land without the air
traffic controllers at post.
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority is attempting
to help the situation but it is not clear if the
traffic operators will budge.
The Ghana Air Traffic Controllers Association is
demanding an immediate redress of safety,
operational, technical and management issues
confronting the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.
It has vowed not to call off the strike until its
members see real commitment to addressing their
concerns.
The Association says it drew the attention of the
Government to its concerns through Transport
Minister Dzifa Attivor and the Board of Directors
but to no avail.
It says the GCAA needs to urgently undergo
restructuring to meet global standards as well as
resolve some crises with Togo and Benin on the
management of the upper airspaces of the three
States. It also complains that Ghana has not been
able to attain FAA Category One.
The group also added that there is total technical
confusion in the Authority with its attendant
safety hazards, blacklisting of Ghana registered
offshore cargo planes among a raft of other
challenges. Source - Radio XYZ
