Some residents using their own means to prevent the fire from causing more havoc. Photo by David Andoh Fire guts illegal structures at Avenor Fire gutted over 200 illegal wooden structures
Wednesday morning at Articulator Station near
Avenor a suburb of Accra.
The fire started around 10:30am razing down the
unauthorized structures sited near the Odawna
drain at Avenor.
Whilst some occupants of surrounding structures
desperately tried to save their properties, others
broke water pipes and used the gushing water to
douse the raging flames.
Some shop owners close to the scene evacuated
their wares into shops they believed were safe.
Fire fighters had a difficult time accessing the
scene to fight the fire.
Although the cause of the fire is not yet known,
eyewitnesses blame it on some herdsmen and
mechanics from whose premises it started.
Some residents who spoke to Myjoyonline.com
accused the fire service of not responding
promptly to distress call.
They said if the fire fighters had responded
swiftly, the situation would have been saved.
But Prince Anaglate, Deputy Public Relations
Officer of the Ghana Fire Service discounted the
claims saying that his outfit responded
immediately they received the report.
He blamed the lack of access roads for the late
arrival of fire fighters.
