WANEP warns of more violent conflicts ahead of elections The West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP)
is warning that violent clashes occurring in
various parts of the country are a precursor to
even more brutal conflicts ahead of the December
polls.
National Programme Officer of the network, Justin
Bayor says the clashes that have been recorded in
at least five regions in the last two weeks -
which has claimed more than ten lives - are just
the tip of the iceberg.
“…At least, before the end of last year we gave
warnings that there will be an emergence of such
violence across the country and there was the need
for the security agencies and all those in
authority to put in adequate measures to prevent
them and that has not been done.”
Mr Bayor added that: “…As it stands we have minor
conflicts emerging, what we are really afraid (of)
is when the major ones start emerging very close
to the elections.
“Signs are there on the wall, you should be able
to read them! “
But Deputy Interior Minister, Kobby Acheampong
insists it is wrong to link the recurring violent
conflicts to the forth coming elections because of
the many under lining causes.
“We have conflicts in non-election years and they
are all of this same magnitude, so it is important
that we look at this from a very strict point of
view.”
