Curfew imposed on Hohoe
A six-to-six curfew has been imposed in the Hohoe
District of the Volta Region following violence
between Moslem youth and indigenes.

This was confirmed by the Regional Minister Henry
Ford Kamel in an interview with Joy News.

He said the Regional Security Council had to take
that action because the “intelligence information
gathered was not positive.”

Two people have been confirmed dead in clashes
triggered by the exhumation of the body of an Imam
in Hohoe.

Moslem youth attacked the Palace of Togbega Gabusu
of Gbi Traditional Area who they claim ordered the
exhumation of the body.

Spokesperson of the Muslim in Hohoe Alhaji Ridwan
Marega claim the body of their revered Imam was
exhumed and dumped by the road side, an action he
described as a "big crime" "which no human being
will accept".

He said Moslem Leaders could not control the youth
who were angered by the 'big crime' against them.

They burnt a vehicle said to belong to the chief.
Loyalists to Togbega Gabuso in a reprisal attack
burnt shops owned by the Moslems in the area.

Tension was at fever pitch with both sides on
rampage. It took the combined personnel from the
police to military units to restore uneasy calm in
the area.

Henry Ford Kamel said the curfew will allow for
the security to take full control of the area and
to halt all activities by the factions.

He warned the security will deal ruthlessly with
anyone who violated the curfew and urged for more
dialogue between the two groups.
