DFP defunct; officially returns to NDC
A joint press conference has been held, Tuesday,
to officially announce the return of the
Democratic Freedom Party to the ruling National
Democratic Congress.

By this declaration, the DFP now becomes a defunct
political party.

Vice President John Mahama led a crack team of NDC
bigwigs to usher in the DFP members who broke away
in 2007 after falling out with the founder of the
NDC, Jerry Rawlings.

Former Chairman of the NDC Obed Asamoah who led
the breakaway, was present together with the then
deputy General Secretary of the NDC Bede Ziedeng.

The return of the DFP comes at a time the NDC
appears to be on loggerheads with the Rawlingses.

Joy News’ Presidential Correspondent, Seth Kwame
Boateng who was present at the conference said
both parties were in high spirits.

He said the NDC considers the DFP return a high
point in their campaign, and needed the party
bigwigs to be present during merger formalities.

The DFP said the decision to return to the NDC was
taken by an Assembly of 45 members across the
country with the promise to work hard to retain
the NDC in power in the December elections.

Reading a joint statement, The General Secretary
of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said as part of
the merger all regional executives of the NDC must
include a DFP member.

Two of the National Executive Council members who
broke away to form the DFP will also be restored
as NEC members of the NDC.

Nketia however asked all DFP members to apply for
official registration as NDC members.

For those DFP members who defected from the NDC,
the General Secretary said they will have to pay
all outstanding dues for their membership to be
restored.

He said they are all free to vie for any position
when the party goes to Congress to elect new party
leaders.
