Ghana’s Democracy needs more safeguards - NDC UK & Ireland Chairman The Chairman of the UK & Ireland Chapter of the
ruling National Democratic Congress, Horis Nii Ayi
Ankrah has noted that although world leaders and
international bodies tout Ghana as an acknowledged
leader in Africa given the integrity of its
democratic practices, the country and especially
political parties, will have to do more to
safeguard the accolade.
He said the recent biometric registration exercise
is a further indication of how the government and
the people of Ghana are determined to enhance and
preserve the democratic processes. This he said
has given the international community the belief
that the country is on the right path and the
recent invitation by President Obama to President
Mills to the forthcoming G8 Summit is a clear
indication of trust and acknowledgement of
excellent work done so far.
He indicated in an interview that Ghana has made
tremendous strides under Presidents Rawlings,
Kufuor and more crucially, in the times of global
economic unrest and other global challenges from
across the world, President Mills has done more
than enough in three years to add to Ghana's
democratic processes.
The Chairman noted however that the country’s
overall democracy is being threatened by the
political parties especially when they find
themselves in opposition. Political parties should
take a very close look at what they do, say or
promote to safeguard democracy.
“Unfortunately, political parties in Ghana are
gradually drifting towards a culture where
personality matter more than policy. As a country
we should not forget that when policies are
working, we would all be paying homage to their
personalities” Nii Ayi Ankrah emphasized.
He referred to the recent heckling of President
John Mills in parliament by the opposition New
Patriotic Party MPs, the widely condemned comments
of Assin North MP, Mr. Ken Adjepong, and what he
says are the unnecessary references by the
opposition NPP and the Progressive People's Party
to the President at the least opportunity, the
signs of desperation, the on-going internal
wrangling in the NDC with claims and counter
claims of rights and privileges, the untold truth
of why Paa Kwesi Ndoum broke away from the CPP,
politics of insults, character assassination and
many more as clear signs of failure, which
threatens the democracy and regrettably reflects a
national naivety we can no longer afford.
