Pornography ‘Walks’ To Parliament
The Minister for Chieftaincy and Culture last
Thursday was at parliament to answer questions
relating to how to minimize the effects of the
exposure of the Ghanaian youth to pornographic and
crime related films in the country.

When the question was put by Hon. George Boakye,
Member of Parliament for Asunafo South about the
plans the Ministry had made to minimize the
situation. He said, the Ministry relied on the
agencies mandated to enforce the regulations which
guide both public and private broadcasting
stations, media houses and producers and most
especially importers of films to safeguard
Ghanaian values and national interests.

According to him, the agencies include the Ghana
Cinematograph Act 196[Act 76] has been found to be
grossly inadequate to control the spate of
indecent, pornographic, violent as well as
normally and culturally unacceptable films being
exhibited on screens these days in public cinema,
video, theatres and no television.

He recalled that during the third parliament, a
new Bill was passed but did not receive
presidential assent because certain amendments
proposed by the House affected the import of the
Bill.

He stated that, the Ministry was greatly concerned
about the proliferation of pornographic materials
via the internet and sale of pornographic films on
Digital Versatile Disc [DVD] and Video Compact
Disc ]VCD] on the open market as well as magazines
and newspapers on the Newsstands.

He mentioned that, the ministry in its cultural
policy, recognize the importance of the
audio-visual media, especially a virile film
industry as an indispensable tool not only for
cultural promotion but as a means of education,
information dissemination and entertainment
enactment of appropriate regulations to protect
and safeguard values and national interests.
