Ghana sprinter Vivian Mills produces fastest 400m time in over 10 years
Sprinter Vivian Mills produced the fastest 400m
time on Ghanaian soil, by Ghanaians and foreigners
alike, in about a decade after clocking a personal
best of 53.85s in the 3rd stop of the 2014
National Open Championship Series, held at El Wak
Stadium on Saturday, 19th April,

The former Central Region 200m and 400m
athlete’s performance comes after a string of
impressive displays in four earlier competitions
this year.

The Ghana National Fire Service Officer also ran
impressively in the maiden event of the Ghana
Athletic Circuit Championship, in Wa earlier this
month.

She had previously paced the 200m event in a
fantastic time of 24.32s, during the second leg of
the National Open Championship series, held at the
Legon stadium in January.

Mills has thus met the B-qualifying standard for
the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and has also
qualified for the African Championships in both
the 200m and 400m. She expressed her delight at
her achievement.

“It was a good race. I needed to make the time
for the Commonwealth Games so I put my all into

adding that, “I also wanted to make sure I set a
mark for my subsequent performances this year.”

The one-time Central Region sprint Queen went off
the radar for about four years, but resurfaced
earlier this year when she was invited back to
track and field by the President of the Ghana
Athletics Association, Professor Francis Dodoo.
She admits that being invited to camp has been
very beneficial to her.

“There have been a lot of changes. Now my
sprinting has changed improved given the rigorous
training regime Prof. Yendork has been taking us
through. The training is very hard and the coach
has taught as a lot.” Mills is confident that
her and her teammates will be ready to do Ghana
proud this year.

Vivian Mills and US based sprinter Janet Amponsah
were once great rivals on the tracks during their
days in second school where Mills competed for the
Central Region while Amponsah represented the
Ashanti Region.

Mills is eagerly looking forward to rekindle her
healthy rivalry with Janet in the coming months.

“We have never met in the 200m event. Maybe we
will meet in the Grand Prix.”

Asked about the possible outcome if she meets
Janet on the tracks again, Vivian Mills told
