Sheikh Asamoah Gyan Arrives…For Nations Cup
Black Stars and Al Ain forward Asamoah Gyan aka
Baby Jet yesterday touched down from oil rich
United Arab Emirates, confident that he will an
appearance at the Equatorial Guinea/ Gabon
championship.

The striker has suffered a hamstring injury ahead
of the championship raising doubts about his
availability.

But Gyan, clad in a typical sheikh white regalia
and in the company of his senior brother Barffuor,
gave the assurance that he would be available for
the national assignment.

He told newsmen on arrival at the Kotoka
International Airport that: 'It's true that I am
injured, but I am responding to treatment.
Everything now lies in the hand of the medical
team who will decide when I will return to duty.'

He said, in any case, 'my absence would not be a
big problem because there are equally good players
in the team who can rise to the occasion.

'The team spirit is the most important thing, and
that is high in the team,' he added.

Responding to the Stars' readiness for the
campaign, he revealed: 'We are not underrating any
country because giants like Egypt, Cameroun and
Nigeria failed to qualify. We will do our best, we
are ready to do anything for Ghana in this
competition.'

Until his injury, the former 13m pounds Sunderland
striker has peaked in performance hitting the back
of the net 14 times in 12 games since joining the
Arab World.

He was met on arrival by Dr Toni Aubyn, board of
trustees of the Asamoah Gyan Foundation and the
Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Chamber of
Mines.

He described Gyan as a worthy ambassador for Ghana
and revealed that the Foundation, which would be
launched on June 16, has begun work at Wenkyi, the
player's home town but will extend its tentacles
to other areas.

Meanwhile, the Stars are expected to leave the
country today for South Africa to fine tune
preparations ahead of the Nations Cup.

Two friendly matches have been lined up against
Kaiser Chiefs and Bafana Bafana on January 12 and
15 respectively.

Ghana, paired against Guinea, Mali and Botswana,
play their first game Botswana on January 24.
