Late President Mills honoured
Accra, Sept. 19, GNA – The late President, John
Evans Atta Mills was on Tuesday given a posthumous
honour by the International Institute of Education
(IIE) in recognition of his highly distinguished
career as a Fulbright Scholar and President of
Ghana at a special ceremony held in the US.

The honour was in recognition of the late
President's exemplary leadership and support in
advancing education in Ghana, his leadership that
increased cooperation and understanding between
Ghana and the world and his resolute support for
advancing education in Ghana.

Former First Lady Mrs. (Dr) Ernestina Naadu Mills,
receiving the award on behalf of her late husband,
said his selection as a recipient of a Fulbright
scholarship in the prestigious Stanford University
in 1971, was one of the major highlights of his
life, both as an academician and later as a
politician.

She said while her late husband was at Stanford
University he nurtured interest in public office
influenced by the examples of academicians and
politicians he came across.

During an official visit to the US last year,
President Mills met with the Chief Executive
Officer of the Institute, Dr. Allan Goodman, where
he was told that being the only African alumnus of
the Institute to have climbed up to become
President, the Institute was very proud of him and
his leadership style which needed to be
recognized.

Dr. Goodman noted that while in office, President
Mills demonstrated a strong resolve to build a
Better Ghana in a very politically accommodating
manner which was worthy of emulation.

Mrs (Dr.) Naadu Mills said the Fulbright
scholarship would keep the memory of the late
President alive and etch his good name in the
annals of history.

She thanked the IIE for the honor done her late
husband on behalf of the family and people of
Ghana, and prayed for God's peace to be with him.
