Suspected Armed robbers kill passenger
From William N-lanjerborrJalulah,Bolgatanga

A young man, believed to be in his late twenties,
who was on board a Neoplan bus from Kumasi to
Bolgatanga, was shot in the head and killed
instantly by suspected armed robbers in the early
hours of yesterday, Tuesday, August 14, 2012, near
Nasia in the Northern Region.

Narrating his ordeal to The Chronicle in
Bolgatanga on his arrival, the driver of the bus,
with registration number GT 184 F, Robert Atayine,
said on reaching the scene, there were sporadic
gunshots targeted at the bus, and in the process
the young man was shot dead, and five others
sustained various gunshot wounds.

According to driver Atayine, the robbers first
targeted him, but when he managed to maneuver his
way through, they started firing into the bus, and
later at the tyres. In the process, the left inner
tyre was penetrated by bullets and deflated
immediately, but the driver still managed to drive
through to theNasiapolice barrier, where he
reported the incident.

Though he said the police officers on duty at the
barrier asked him to send the victims to the
WalewaleHospital for treatment, he preferred
driving them to Bolgatanga, where he thought they
could have better medical attention.

There were bullet holesin the windscreen, body,
andinside the bus, where the deceased passenger
sat.

Checks at the Bolgatanga Municipal Police Station
indicated that a report was made of the robbery
attempt, but the name of the deceased passenger
was not given. Meanwhile, information available to
this reporter indicates that he was returning from
Sunyani, where he went and paid his admission fee
at the Polytechnic.

He body was immediately released to the family in
Bawku for burial, in line with Islamic tradition.
