AMISSAH would have gotten nod despite gay allegation – Ekumfi
Prof Ameyaw Ekumfi, Member of Parliament for
Techiman North says if Kwesi Amissah Arthur had
confirmed the allegations of homosexuality, he
would still have sailed through as Vice President.
He made the comments on Joy News’ current affairs
program pm:EXPRESS immediately after the swearing
in of the vice president. Explaining his opinion,
he noted “I don’t think being gay is a
qualification for being vice president”.
But grilled further, he said he did not want to
speculate. Mr. Ekumfi, MP for Techiman North was
sharing his personal opinion on the matter. For
now it is not clear what would have been the
appointments committee’s position on the matter if
the then vice president nominee had responded in
the affirmative.

Mr. Ekumfi says the simple fact that being gay is
not a qualification for the vice president
position; he does not believe Mr. Amissah Arthur
would have been disqualified. “I have known Mr.
Amissah for some time. I was in a way happy that
that matter came up for him to publicly explain
his position. I hold this position because
otherwise, the public would have continued to talk
about this”.

Mr. Ekumfi noted from his demeanor, it was obvious
Mr. Arthur was relieved that he got the
opportunity to clear the air. A question about the
vice president’s sexuality had been making the
rounds on some media platforms forcing Bekwai MP
Joe Osei Owusu to ask it bluntly at the vetting
Monday. But the vice president vehemently
dismissed the allegations saying they were mere
fabrications from disgruntled persons who tried to
extort money from him.
